Isabella is the founder of The Fiber Art Society and the creator of the Community Crochet Mural Project. Fifteen years ago, Isabella began her journey as a fiber artist and soon found herself intertwined with yarn bombing, a form of fiber art typically involving crochet or knit motifs in public spaces. It wasn't until June of 2024, that she decided that her yarn bombing could be taken a step further-- by temporarily installing her work for public view, and then giving it a second life as blankets to be donated to those in need. Following International Yarn Bombing Day, she began the Community Crochet Mural Project.
At its completion, the community mural will be comprised of 333 granny squares (83,916 double crochet), stretching over twenty feet wide and five feet tall. It will be installed October 16th for the NEON Art Festival (17th & 18th). Following the end of the festival, the mural will be disassembled into four blankets and donated to the YWCA of South Hampton Roads. Learn more about the YWCA here.
Through the NEON Arts District, we have found an eclectic community of fiber artists who have dedicated their time, energy, and resources to the Community Crochet Mural Project. We have been hosted by local small businesses including: Zeke's, The High Cup, Chrysler Museum of Art, and 757 Creative ReUse Center. We have also received yarn donations from our members and 757 Creative ReUse Center.
That's a wrap! Our mural is officially off to become blankets for those in need. Stay tuned for what we have planned next!
